Community Health Work

Our Proprietary Trainings in
Community Health Work

Community Health Workers are the most promising form of delivering health services to resource-constrained and low-wealth areas and can provide a vital service in their communities.

A CHW is a trusted member of the community being served and acts as an intermediary between individuals, families, their community and basic health and social services. CHWs work to enhance health, increase access, and foster healthy outcomes, and they are capable of providing preventative, promotional, and rehabilitative care to their community.

CHWs are most effective when they are properly trained to provide information and services and to draw in appropriate professionals as needed in a timely way. To that end, Avery HEC can provide a 4-hour Introduction to Community Health Work class designed and led by Kathey Avery and Kevin Rumley of Veterans Treatment Court. It gives an in-depth look for those who may not have in depth knowledge and are interested in hiring or becoming a CHW in their community. Class scheduling can be flexible, and it is now eligible for CEU credit. Contact us to find out more or set up a class for your organization.

Kathey Avery and Kevin Rumley; Train the Trainers for the Introduction to Community Health Work class

Avery was among a group of statewide stakeholders who defined the roles, competencies, and standardized training for community health workers (CHWs) in North Carolina. Their three-year effort resulted in a report issued in May 2018 that is laying the foundation of a system that utilizes CHWs in improving healthcare services, especially for those of low wealth and those most impacted by poor health.
